Iodine: The Alpha Athlete Supplement
A lot of you know that Vince was a huge advocate of getting iodine in your diet. Some of you have been taking Iodine for decades because Vince told you. But, what is the reason that we NEED Iodine in our diets by exploring what is it and what does it do?
Iodine is a trace mineral that is essential for normal growth and development. The majority of the iodine in our bodies is stored in the thyroid gland. Of course, most know that the thyroid gland controls the metabolic rate of the body. Well, Iodine is the element that controls the Thyroid.
In the late 1800′s in America, we were basically 95% farmers and our intake of natural iodine was extremely high – 50mg. to 80mg. to a low of around 15mg. to 18mg! Thyroid problems were nil 100 years ago and iodine was looked at with high regard to treating pneumonia, bronchitis, infections, and brain damage. As time progressed and our soil was not naturally farmed but replaced with the synthetic fertilizer, N.P.K. (potassium nitrate) and iodine slowly disappeared. Goiters (enlarged thyroids) appeared in our necks to indicate an unhealthy thyroid condition. Also, selenium worked together with iodine to fight many diseases – it also is grossly deficient in our soil!
I know what you're thinking. I get Iodine in my salt and that is plenty. I would like to respectfully agree. Iodine in salt (potassium iodide) is 10% bio-available. That means that if you are consuming a regular amount of salt a day you are only absorbing 30-77 μg a day.
Also, keep in mind that although there is some iodine in our table salt Iodine has fallen 50% over the last 40 years and some of US households don't even use salt (this makes my tastebuds sad).
Now, we may not have deadly deficiencies here in the states because of our Iodine levels but a large amount of North Americans still have deficiencies. Here is a list of potential signs of Iodine Deficiency:
- Poor Thyroid Health
- Optimum Utilization of calories
- Depression
- Weight Gain
- Infertility
- Skin Health
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Poor perception levels
Just to name a few potential signs.
So what should we do? Supplementing with Iodine is obvious by now. But you need to understand that when adding the right amount of Iodine in your body, your body will naturally want to detoxify the dangerous chemicals that we've been ingesting (bromine, fluoride, and chlorine derivatives).
Dr. David Brownstein recommends supplementing with a really good unrefined salt. What that will do is flush out those toxic chemicals when taking Iodine supplements like our I/KI Tablets.
We recommend starting with our I/KI Tablets and our Unrefined Salt you can get them here.
